7 things I let go of for a more calm, cozy fall ๐Ÿ‚

With the cooler weather and shorter days, now is the perfect time to make our homes feel warm, cozy, and calming. But letโ€™s face itโ€”finding that sense of peace when life is busy can feel like a serious struggle. Between work, family, and a never-ending to-do list, itโ€™s easy to feel like youโ€™re chasing a calm, cozy fall without ever really finding it. Does that sound familiar?

If youโ€™ve been looking around your home, thinking it doesnโ€™t feel like the peaceful sanctuary you want it to be, youโ€™re not alone. Many of us get caught up in perfectionism, overcommitting, and trying to keep up with lifeโ€™s demands. This can lead to stress, overwhelm, and a home thatโ€™s far from the cozy retreat we crave, especially during the fall.

But hereโ€™s the good newsโ€”you donโ€™t need to overhaul your life to create more calm and cozy vibes. Instead, Iโ€™ve found that letting go of a few key things can make a world of difference. Today, Iโ€™m sharing seven things Iโ€™m letting go of to create a calm, cozy fall that have helped me transform both my home and my mindset. And trust me, number seven is an absolute game-changer!

1. Letting go of perfectionism can lead to a calm, cozy home

Perfectionism can be a huge source of stress, especially when it comes to our homes. I used to obsess over having a perfectly styled living room or a spotless kitchen, but it never made me feel truly relaxed. This fall, I decided to let go of the idea that everything has to be “just right” in order to feel cozy.

reading nook

Cozy Tip: Forget about having a Pinterest-perfect home. Instead, embrace warmth and comfort with simple touchesโ€”a soft blanket, a cozy reading nook, or personal mementos that bring you joy. Remember, cozy is about creating a space that feels good, not one that looks perfect.

2. Saying โ€œYesโ€ to everything

Fall can come with a packed scheduleโ€”work, social commitments, and prepping for the holidays. I used to say yes to everything, leaving me feeling overwhelmed and drained. This season, Iโ€™m learning to set boundaries and say no when I need more downtime. Itโ€™s been a game-changer for my mental health.

evening at home

Cozy Tip: Spend more evenings at home, and create a fall ritual that helps you relax. Whether itโ€™s sipping tea while reading a book, or soaking in a warm bath, make time to slow down and savor the season. Let your home be a place of rest and calm.

3. Avoid fast fashion & disposable decor for a calm, cozy home

I used to buy into every new seasonal trend, from fast fashion to disposable decor. It felt fun at the moment, but those purchases didnโ€™t add lasting value to my life. Now, Iโ€™m focusing on sustainable, quality pieces that make my home feel cozy year-round.

throw blanket

Cozy Tip: Skip the cheap, throwaway decor and invest in timeless pieces like cozy wool blankets, soft lighting, or natural materials like wood and linen. Not only will your home feel more intentional, but these items will bring a lasting sense of warmth and calm to your space.

4. Multi-Tasking

I used to multi-task constantly, thinking it would help me get more done. But it just left me feeling exhausted and scattered. This fall, Iโ€™ve been focusing on doing one thing at a time, whether itโ€™s enjoying my morning coffee, reading, or decorating. The result? More presence and more joy.

walking in leaves

Cozy Tip: Fall is the perfect time to slow down. Try single-taskingโ€”whether itโ€™s cooking a hearty soup, decorating with pumpkins, or enjoying a walk through the fall leaves. Savoring the simple pleasures of the season will help you feel more grounded and present.

5. Comparison to others doesn’t help create a calm, cozy home

Social media can make it hard not to compare our lives to others, especially during fall when everyone is posting perfectly decorated homes and fall activities. But this year, Iโ€™m letting go of that comparison trap and focusing on creating a home that feels good to me.

personal self discover

Cozy Tip: Instead of trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing, focus on creating a space that reflects your own style and personality. Use meaningful items like family heirlooms, favorite books, or photos that make you feel at home. Cozy spaces are personal, not perfect.

6. Decision Fatigue

Every day, we make countless decisions, from what to wear to what to cook, and it can be overwhelming. Simplifying these choices has freed up so much mental space for me this fall, allowing me to focus on what really matters.

meal planning

Cozy Tip: Create a fall capsule wardrobe filled with soft, cozy knits, or plan a weekly meal routine with comforting foods. Reducing decision fatigue will help you create more mental space to enjoy the seasonโ€™s simple pleasuresโ€”like sipping a warm cup of tea by the fire.

7. Negative Self-Talk

This is the hardest thing to let go of, but also the most transformative. Negative self-talk was sabotaging my ability to relax and feel peaceful. This fall, Iโ€™m working on replacing those critical thoughts with more compassionate, positive ones, and itโ€™s been a game-changer.

journaling

Cozy Tip: Set up a cozy journaling space where you can reflect on positive affirmations and gratitude. Light a candle, grab a soft throw, and take a few moments each day to nurture a kinder, more compassionate inner dialogue.

Letting go of these seven things has brought more calm and coziness into my life this fall, and I hope it can do the same for you. Is there something youโ€™re ready to let go of this season? Iโ€™d love to hear about itโ€”drop a comment below and letโ€™s chat about how weโ€™re creating cozy, calm spaces this fall.

Remember, a cozy home isnโ€™t about how it looksโ€”itโ€™s about how it feels. Hereโ€™s to a fall filled with warmth, peace, and plenty of cozy vibes!
