Holiday cookies don’t have to rely on processed ingredients to taste amazing. Here are some of my favorite swaps that keep cookies delicious while adding a healthy twist:

  1. Use Whole-Grain or Nut Flours
    • Swap refined all-purpose flour for whole wheat pastry flour, almond flour, or oat flour.
    • Why it works: These options are higher in fiber and nutrients, creating cookies that are more filling and less likely to spike blood sugar.
    • Pro Tip: Almond flour adds a natural richness and nuttiness, while oat flour gives a tender, cake-like texture.
  2. Natural Sweeteners
    • Replace white sugar with maple syrup, coconut sugar, or dates.
    • Why it works: These alternatives are less processed, often lower on the glycemic index, and add complex flavors like caramel or molasses.
    • Pro Tip: When using liquid sweeteners like maple syrup, reduce the other liquids in your recipe slightly to keep the dough from becoming too wet.
  3. Coconut Oil or Nut Butters Instead of Butter
    • Use melted coconut oil or creamy almond butter in place of traditional butter.
    • Why it works: These healthy fats create a rich texture without dairy. Nut butters also add protein, making your cookies a bit more nutritious.
  4. Egg Alternatives
    • Substitute eggs with flaxseed meal (1 tbsp flax + 3 tbsp water = 1 egg) or unsweetened applesauce.

Making vegan cookies that are soft, chewy, or crispy (depending on your preference) can be easy if you follow these tips:

    • Without eggs or traditional gluten, overmixing can make the dough tough or too crumbly. Mix just until the ingredients come together.
  2. Chill the Dough When Needed
